Most people associate tooth decay with sugar, but acid in foods and beverages that you consume on a daily basis can also be hazardous. This acid can erode away at your teeth over time, increasing your risk of decay, discoloration, and sensitivity. The good news is that California Dental Group provides some suggestions for enjoying your favorite foods and beverages while reducing the risk of harm.
What happens to teeth as they erode?
Enamel, which is essentially a hard surface that protects your teeth, coats your teeth. The acid tears away the enamel, exposing the dentin (the stuff beneath your enamel). As a result, bacteria, plaque, and decay are much more likely to attack your teeth.
What is causing this deterioration?
Calcium is necessary for strong teeth, but it can be leached from your enamel if your teeth are regularly exposed to acid. As a result, the surface begins to deteriorate. Acid can come from a variety of places, including:
- Any carbonated beverage
- Wine
- All fruit juices can cause tooth erosion, although apple, lemon, orange, and cranberry juices are the most acidic
- Fruits
- Candy
- Sugar does not contain a lot of acid, but it does encourage acid-producing bacteria to proliferate in your mouth.
Is there any deterioration on my teeth?
Tooth erosion manifests itself in a variety of ways. The best circumstance is when you find out about it early on. If you see any of these symptoms, call California Dental Group at 800-407-0161 immediately:
- Sensitive teeth
- Teeth discoloration
- Rounded teeth
- Transparent teeth
- Cracks
- Cupping
How can you avoid tooth erosion?
There are a few things you can do to mitigate acid erosion’s impacts. First, instead of snacking on acidic foods, eat them with meals. The acid in them can be mitigated by eating them with other meals. Drink plenty of water while eating or drinking anything acidic, as the water will help to wash the acid out of your mouth.
Use a straw when drinking an acidic beverage to reduce the amount of time your teeth are in contact with the beverage. Choose non-carbonated drinks instead of bubbles. Finally, you might be surprised to find that brushing your teeth shortly after eating acidic meals is not recommended since you want to give your enamel time to harden once it has been softened. Wait 30 minutes and simply rinse your mouth with water while you wait.
